4 week old baby

Good morning. I need some advice please.

My son is 4 weeks old today. He was a big boy at birth. 3.7kg. I tried to breastfeed him for 2 weeks. I stopped by week 3. I was advised to put him on Nan1. But he was always hungry. Even afer 100ml! Also the Nan1 made him extremely constipated. I give him pro biotics every day and a drop of olive oil in every second bottle and still no luck. I took him to our GP who perscribed glycerin suppositories. With this he has a stool. But it is greenish with little pips in it?? He also seemed to get cramps from the Nan. He would sleep for an hour and wake up, legs pulled up, arms flinging, arching his back and screaming. I normally give 1ml of scopex syrup for cramps. But gives no relief. He also gets 8 drops of telement drops before each feed.

I was advised to put him on Lactogen to see if that helps with the hunger. I did so yesterday. He slept for 2 hours and woke up doing the same thing. But he didn''t suck his hands afterwards, so I think that it is more filling.

He doesn''t spit up a lot. Maybe a teaspoon full in every other feed. So I don''t think it is reflux.

The only other thing I can think of is that he is lactose intollarant. I was allergic to all milk as a baby and was put onto soy. I asked the gp about this and she said he would bring up phlegm and have a runny tummy? I can sometimes hear a little phlegm when he has a wind but that''s all.

My sister in law gave me Bennetts Colic mix but I don''t want to give him all sorts of things. He is so small.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you.

There are are several possibile answers to your baby's problem; either he is lactose intolerant or he is allergic to cow' milk or he is a colicky baby or he has reflux. In addition he is a hungry baby and needs a formula that will fill him is not going to be simple to decide what to do here. Try him on a low allergy formula first such as NAN HA or Novalac HA and see if he is more comfortable. If he is not you will need to put him on Novalac SD formula. That will help for hunger and restlessness.Try these formulas first and if your baby's problem continues it would be best to consult your nearest baby clinic for advice.
