3yr 2mnths old loud at home and switch off at creche

Hi Doc,

My daughter talks a lot at home, she sing, dance, ask questions, likes playing with her friend or 4months little sister, wants to talk about the activities at creche but cant really explain well, i think her speech is delayed as she cant say long sentences, her shord senteces is often just word whithout nouns basically she has the vocab. if she finds a word difficult she would start with the difficult part e.g yoghurt=ghurya. like other kids she has a good memory.

She separate well in the morning at creche but they say she is quite the whole day, not a sigle word, shes playing well, smile now and again but does not talk to other kids or teacher. shes been at this creche since January. She participated well during their recent concert which was basically dancing and jumipng. We speak sepdi at home and the creche use English and Afrikaans, she is more comfartable with Afriikans than English at home.

The sister and teacher advised me to send her for evaluation. Please advise if there is a serious problem as i am stressing, if so, we live in Centurion area is there any child psychologist or physiotherapist i can go to.

Thank you

Your daughter seems very bright from your description. She may be a bit shy at school which is very common. She should try to make a good friend at school so that she can join in a bit more there. She does seem to be struggling to pronounce a few words and may have problems hearing both English and Afrikaans. It would be worthwhile asking a speech therapist to see her.She does not need to see a psychologist or physiotherapist.

Thank you, i feel a little better now about the situation. I visited the GP yesterday for a referral, she said i should explain to the Kindersielkunde before i make an apointment to see if she is the right person to go to since this process can be expensive.

Hi Nare,

My 3 year old is the same, at home he talks a lot and then at school, the teacher says he is shy! What, that does not sound like my kid!! This is his second year at school and the teacher says he is talking much more and has made more friends.

I speak English to him at home and at creche they speak Afrikaans only, so it was difficult for him in the beginning but now he only speaks Afrikaans.

I think give your daughter some time, she soon will become confident. Do not be worried.
