Q.

3year olds ears

Hello Doc

My three year old has always had issues with her ears.
Sh e ha grommets inserted when she turned 2, and it was only after a year and a half that a doctor confirmed that the grommets are out.

Recently she started complaining that her ears are bothering her. She has a LOT of wax,so I normally try to clean as far as I can, without it being uncomfortable for her.
Tonight when I checked her ears, it seemed very dirty and when I cleaned it and looked like dry blood. Not a lot but it did not look like wax...

Must I take her to see a doctor?
And what can I do about all the wax,as it really bothers her.

Thanks a lot!
Appreciate all your time and advice!

You are welcome. It is possible that your daughter has an external ear infection called otitis externa. This needs special treatment otherwise can become rather chronic.Wax is a normal protective mechanism for the ear canals and unless it is causing a problem such as interference with hearing it is not necessary to try to remove it.It would be best to ask your doctor to see your daughter about a possible problem with otitis externa.
