36 h of fever, then chesty cough

Dear Paed

I am sure I should know the answer to this by now, but I would rather check with you. My 18 month old developed quite a high fever 39.5 from Sat afternoon till about midnight on Sunday. It peaked whenever the fevermeds were worked out (gave him Ponstan or Ponstel alternated with Empaped). He was completely happy when the fever was subdued by the meds. At the same time he did have a cough which is quite chesty and is not getting better. He''s eating and happy though and no sign of fever. When do I need to take him to see the Doc? or should I be giving him something for the cough? I have Singulair from a previous prescription, also Celestamine and some Duolin. Thanks!

Your son has a viral chest infection called bronchiolitis. He has it rather mildly and he does not appear to be distressed. If he is eating and sleeping well then he does not need any strong medicines and will get better by himself. He will do well if you give him the Singulair for 10 days and nebulise him with Duolin twice a day for as long as he seems to need it.
