3 yo son''s growth

Dear Prof

Our (Arnold-Chiari 1) 3 yo went through a few months of greatly reduced growth velocity when he was about 15 months old. At that time he also had very low IGF-1 levels, but that corrected a year later. The probable reason for that was that he was severly constipated (we did not know as his stool was mostly normal) and that he had reduced absorption. His length had gone from about th 75th percentile at 8-12months to the 5th percentile at 18 months. After he started Pegicol at 21 months his growth improved a lot and he is now at the 25th percentile at 36 months. I am still concerned that he is not growing optimally as he still has fecal loading despite taking Pegicol daily. Our pead is not concerned and wants to continue with the Pegicol as long as it takes. Is there anything we can give him to boost his growth and his length? he is by far the shortest in his class at his pre-school. Many thanks as always for given such sound and complete help.

You are very welcome. It is well known that the Arnold Chiari syndrome is in itself associated with poor weight gain and growth and this is probably the main reason for your son being so short.I am not aware of anything specific that can be recommended to improve his growth at his age,but it would be worthwhile taking him to be seen by a paediatric endocrinologist at this stage.
