Q.

3 year old often comes down with a virus

My 3 year old is prone to getting virusses which present with high fever. We take him to the doctor and normally passes after 2 days. My concern is that since July he has had a virus almost every month, some months more than once and he is not even in creche. One of the gp''s mentioned that it may be allergy related as there is asthma on both sides of the family. Do you perhaps have any advice for us please?

It is very common for preschool children to get repeated virus infections. It is unusual that your 3 year old is not at a creche.Does he have an older sibling at school or does he attend a play school some days of the week? The immune systems of young children have to adjust to the many types of viruses that they come across on a daily basis. It would be a good idea to ask your doctor to test your son's immunoglobulin levels. In particular he should have his IgA, IgG and IgG subclass tests done to see if these are normal. If they are you can be confident that your son will outgrow this 'frequent infection' stage by the time he starts going to school.
