2mnth old baby with flu

Hi doc. My baby is just over 2mnths. She has a blocked nose &  a cough. I''m giving her sterimar for the blocked nose, but I think the post nasal drip is gettin into her chest. She hardly sleeps as her cough awakes her... Its more of a wettish cough. What should I do...
I''m really not keen to go to the paediatrician as its always a 2-3hour wait &  I feel she is exposed to more infection there (with all the other sick kids), also they charge an arm and a leg!!

It sounds as if your baby has a virus infection probably due to RSV. Is she at a creche? She has a cold with a chest infection, probably bronchiolitis. It is essential to keep her nose clear.Use Salex nose drops twice daily to help her. If her nose discharge still blocks her nose use a suction device called a Nosefrida to suck the mucous out of her nostrils. If she remains too ill to feed properly or she cannot sleep she will need to be seen by the paediatrician as she may require admisssion to hospital.

If she has a blocked nose, then its a cold not flu. Flu is a serious viral ilness with high temperatures and no blocked nose.

Some peadiatrician''s aren''t great with their time management - often the more popular ones - so everyone just waits out the long wait int he waiting room. Why not phone before you go in and check witht he receptionist whether he is running on time or how late he is running so that you can arrive only about half an hour before your appointment? Or, ask around your friends for another peadiatrician who isn''t so full.

Otherwise, go and see a GP and if baby does need to see a pead, they will tell you and then you can go.

When such a young baby is sick, it is very worrying.
For the nose, keeping things running and draining helps - so the saline spray (but warm it in your pocket first) or some breastmilk in the nose helps. Using a humidifier might help a bit with the cough. SIt is best to see the doctor though - especially when baby is so very young.
