21 month old runny tummy

Hi Doc,

My 21 month old has had a runny tummy for the past 4 days. But has no other symptoms of illness. He has about 3-4 loose stools per day. I have been giving him Lacteol Forte, probiotic drops and some Rehidrate solution.

Do I need to take him to the doctor? What can i do to stop the runny tummy?

Thank you.

At this age a condition known as 'toddlers diarrhoea' is common. Usually this starts off exactly as you have descibed here and typically children do not appear to be ill. The most common cause is a reaction to too much natural fruit sugar, known as fructose, in the diet. Stop all fruit juice and also all fruit except apples. You can give your son frequent extra sips of Rehidrat for a day or two and a probiotic for 5 days.Continue to keep him off fruit juice but he can gradually start eating fruit again after a 1 week break.
