18 Month old bites

Hi Doc,

I have my 18month old boy who started staying with my mom in August. My mom told me this morning that he just cannot stop biting everyone at home and he gets very emotional about it he will never stop crying until he has taken a bite from someone.

I even asked myself if he is angry because he misses me and his daddy. I do not know what to think.

Please help.

Children quite often develop this habit at this age. It can be quite a problem espeially if they bite other children at creche or at school. The reason why a child starts biting is not always obvious. This is a habit which must be stopped. If he tries to bite anyone say "Stop biting' in a firm clear voice. Never plead with him, just be very clear that you mean him to stop. If he does not stop take him to his room immediately and close the door. Do not let him out until he is quiet. He is rather young but try to get him to say that he is sorry when he comes oout of his room. Do this each and every time he tries to bite until he learns to stop doing this.Obviously your Mom must use the same methodwhen he is with her.

He could well be quite frightened about where you and his dad are but because he can''t verbalise his fear, he bites.
