My Son is now 17 months and is still not walking he only holds with couches or coffee table but does not walk by himself. I am very worried. What could be the problem?

This is very common and it does seem that your child is trying to start walking now. Hold his hand and and walk with him to show him the idea.Do this several times a day.He should start walking quite soon. Many children only learn to walk at about 18 months.

My sister and myself had kids 6 months apart and both our mariages failed soon after the kids were born. We live together from when my boy was 6months and her girl 1 yr. Their environment and stimulation was identical. My boy started to walk at 8 months and her girl at 19 months.

Kids are all different.

Is he meeting his other milestones in other areas of development?
Has he crawled?
Does he pull himself up on furniture and cruise around using the furniture?
If its yest to all of this, then chances are he''ll walk soon enough.

The average age to walk is around 14 months, though the range is from about 10 months to around 16 months, so your baby is walking late, but some babies do. I have an aunt who has nothing physically wrong with her at all and she didn''t walk until she was 18 months old. The rest of the family all tended to walk at around 10 - 12 months so she was out of the ordinary, but she did start walking and running and there was no problem.

As you are worried, perhaps you should visit your pead for a developmental assessment, if there is a problem, s/he will spot that, and if there is no problem, then your mind will have been put at rest.
