Q.

12yr old with possible rib injury

My 12 yr daughter has severe pain arround the rib area(front and back). She woke up yesterday morning and within a few hours was in excrutiating pain. Breathing is painfull. We rushed her thro'  to our doctor and he examined her and was quite surprised at the amount of pain she was in. He said her lungs were clear and examined her tummy, took her temperature. She had been picking up toddlers the passed few days and we thought it may be a muscle she has pulled. He gave her an anti-inflammotory injection and pre-scirbed myprodol for her. She is still in a lot of pain especially when the myprodol wears off. I am beginning to think she has injured her ribs but she has not hurt herself in any way. Please can you give me some advise?

It seems unlikely that your daughter has injured her ribs. There is no evidence that she hurt herself in any way. There are several conditions that can cause this kind of pain including a viral infection of the chest muscles called Bornholm's disease. Other possibilities are shingles and a type kind of pneumonia called atypical pneumonia or pneumonia with pleurisy. Please ask your paediatrician to see your daughter.
