11 month old sleep

My baby is 11 months old, happy during the day.
My problem is with sleep and naps. He really struggles to fall asleep by himself, I have tried putting him to bed awake, but he is very subborn ! He sleeps soundly in my arms, but the moment I put him down he is awake and screams/cries.
During the night I have to rock him until he falls asleep, the moment I put him down he is awake. This carries on for nearly 2 hours at a time.
During the daytime naps he will sleep, but often wakes and I can see he is still tired, but he won' t fall asleep again.
He refuses to take a dummy.
Do I sleep train him, or could sometime really be bothering him.
If I opt to do the sleep training, how do I go about doing this.
He really gets upset if I leave him to cry.
This is my second son and I do not expect for him to sleep through every night. I just feel this is starting to affect our family negatively.
He also refuses to be fed, he only wants to eat fingerfoods/ by himself. Could he be hungry ?

Thank you

You need to be sure that your baby is not hungry before you start to consider sleep training. If you are certain that he is not hungry then you can start on a controlled crying programme. You will find all the information you need on this site or on Google.
