1 yo sick again - allergies?

Dear Prof

My 1 yo son was on antibiotics 10 days ago for a lower respiratory tract infection. He recovered well, but a few days ago he developed a cold again with a dry cough and purulent nasal discharge. Two days ago the cough became more chesty, wheezy/crackly and productive (haven''t seen anything coughed up though) and yesterday he developed a fever. I am guessing that a visit to our paed is needed? I was also wondering whether he could have underlying allergies, that cause these on and off colds? What would be indicative of allergies? he doesn''t have allergic shiners, but has had a runny nose (mostly purulent) for months now. We go through bottles of Sterimar. Many thanks for taking so much time and care to answer our questions!

Thank you,you are welcome. It does seem that your son still has a chest infection. I am concerned that you have noticed that he is wheezing and has crackles as this can be the sign of broncho-pneumonia in infants. He probably also has enlarged and infected adenoids. His syptoms are not those of an allergy, but more of recurrent viral infections with the additional problem of possible adenoidal enlargement and infection leading to a persistent post nasal drip. He should be seen by his paediatrician first and also should benefit from the opinion of an ENT specialist.
