1 yo red large tonsils and fever

Dear Prof

My 1 yo son has been running a temp (38.5) since Tue afternoon. The sister at the baby clinic checked him out on Thu and his tonsils were enlarged and red, but no exudate or pus pockets. She thus said its most likely viral. He was still having a temp at 02h00 this morning when the Empaped ''ran out'', but he is happy and eating and playing otherwise. Is a visit to the doc needed or when should I expect the virus to run its course? I am loathe to have antibiotics prescibed as he suffers from recurring thrush. Thanks for always being there to help!

You are welcome. It is possible that your baby son has Roseola. Your description of his symptoms suggests this diagnosis. The roseola rash usually appears after 3 to 4 days of high fever and lasts for a day or two. Your baby son's fever should then subside. He does not need to be seen by a doctor as he is happy and is eating and playing.Treat his fever with Panado or Calpol.
