Patients are put on a course of treatment for a period of 6 to 8 months as soon as TB is diagnosed. They receive tablets and in some cases they receive injections for the first two months of treatment. The treatment is also known as DOTS [Daily Observed Treatment Shortcourse]. The tablets have to be taken under supervision to ensure regular and effective therapy.
Patients usually respond well to treatment and soon return to work if they have taken time off at all. Also those suffering from HIV can recover from TB.
