Support and encouragement for prostate cancer sufferers
The Prostate Support Group supports and encourages those who suffer from prostate cancer as well as their families, upon diagnosis, during and after completion of the treatment. It empowers men to learn more about their bodies and their health and to participate in their health in a proactive way.
Coping skills are learnt from one another, the opportunity to share similar experiences and to shed those fears and anxieties. Hope is restored by members who have dealt with the situation and offers hope and support to those who are in the beginning stages of their treatment. Informed choices about their treatment can be made and they can share their wisdom on how to live happy, fulfilling lives despite the intrusion of a myriad of unwelcome treatments and the side effects.
The group further offers one-on-one visitation and telephone support, newsletter, patient education materials, dialogue between spouses.
The support group shall not interfere with the physician- patient relationship, provide medical advice, attempt to be the ultimate authority on all aspects of prostate cancer or limit the individual’s option to seek other sources of prostate cancer information or support.
The format of the meetings
The format of the meeting is generally an introduction, a guest speaker (discussing a relevant topic to prostate cancer) questions and then an informal get-together over refreshments. A local urologist and other medical practitioners often attend these meetings to answer urology or other related questions. The emphasis is on support in a relaxed fun environment and the cancer survivor is encouraged to bring his partner to the meetings, as total family support is encouraged. The group also aims to promote cancer awareness and the importance of early detection. The prime objective is to empower patients and family members through knowledge, information and education.
