What are the advantages of postoperative pain relief?

Postoperative pain relief is very important but unfortunately often neglected. Advantages include relief of the patient’s discomfort, improved postoperative mobility, improved respiratory function, decreased risk for cardiac complications, decreased risk for deep venous thrombosis, improved gastro-intestinal function, decrease in stress response and decreased incidence of chronic pain.
