TIP: Preventing osteoporosis

 It’s World Osteoporosis Day on the 20th October. Here are some tips on how to prevent this disease.
Osteoporosis is a disease that causes bones to become porous, and therefore less strong and prone to fractures.  1 in 3 women develop osteoporosis in South Africa.  It also affects men – 1 in 5 mean develop osteoporosis.
To prevent osteoporosis, follow these guidelines:
  • Be active and do weight-bearing exercise such as walking and exercising with light weights
  • Don’t smoke
  • Eat a healthy balanced diet
  • Limit your intake of alcohol
