General information

Silymarin is a hepatoprotector. Hepatoprotectors include a wide variety of nutrients and chemicals that seem to be able to protect the liver from toxic insults.

In South Africa silymarin is registered for the treatment of alcohol-induced liver disease.

This medication does not cure the underlying condition, but simply keeps the symptoms under control. For is to be effective, it has to be taken regularly, even if you do not notice an immediate effect.

It is advised not to discontinue treatment before the recommended course has been completed.

How does silymarin work?

In animal experiments, silymarin (derived from a plant source) has been shown to possess an antihepatotoxic action against various liver cell toxins as a result of anti-oxidant activity.
