Permethrin

Permethrin is an ectoparasiticide. Ectoparasiticides are drugs that are used to treat ectoparasitic infections.

Permethrin is also one of multiple active ingredients found in Nitagon (Nappi Code: 897116-003).

General information
Permethrin is an ectoparasiticide. Ectoparasiticides are drugs that are used to treat ectoparasitic infections.

Ectoparasites are parasites found on the surface of the body and include scabies, a skin disorder caused by a mite that burrows into the skin and produces an intense, itchy rash, and pediculosis, better known as a lice infection with either the head, pubic or body louse.

In South Africa permethrin is registered for the treatment and short-term prevention of head, body an pubic lice infections. It not only kills lice, but also kills their nits.

Permitrin is also effective in treating scabies.

Permethrin should only be applied as directed and repeated exposure should be avoided.

Contact with broken skin, mucous membranes and the eyes should be avoided.

How does permethrin work?
Permethrin is a nerve poison that causes paralysis and death of parasites as a result of its effect on the parasite’s nervous system.
