Dimethicone is prescribed to reduce flatulence and to relieve abdominal pain or discomfort, which is due to excessive gas in the digestive tract. In infants it is of particular use in the relief of colic.

It is rarely absorbed systemically and has few side effects.

Dimethicone is often mixed with antacid or antiflatulant preparations.

How does dimethicone work?

Dimethicone is an anti-foaming agent - it reduces the surface tension of gas bubbles, causing them to combine into larger bubbles in the stomach, which can then be passed more easily by means of belching.
