Cyclizine is the active ingredient of Aculoid, Adco-Cyclizine, Medazine, Nauzine and Valoid.

Cyclizine is also one of multiple active ingredients found in Cyclimorph, Migril and Wellconal.

General information

Cyclizine is an antihistamine drug useful in treating motion sickness, nausea and vomiting, and vertigo - the dizziness or spinning sensation associated with inner ear disturbances.

The use of cyclizine may lead to drowsiness and blurred vision. Driving and hazardous work should be avoided at the start of treatment, and such activities should be delayed until it is determined how the patient is affected. If alcohol is taken with this medication, the combination can result in significant sedation.

To prevent motion sickness the drug should be taken 20 to 30 minutes prior to departure, and the dose should be repeated every 4-6 hours.

How does cyclizine work?

Cyclizine is thought to interfere with signal transmission between the hypothalamus, the part of the brain where nausea and vomiting is controlled, and the stomach a reaction that would normally result in vomiting. It is also thought to block signal transmission between the middle ear and the hypothalamus, thereby reducing motion sickness.
