The combination of bismuth subgallate, bismuth oxide & zinc oxide is the active ingredient of Anusol suppositories (Nappi code: 704148-005) & Anusol ointment (Nappi code: 826375-006).

General information
This combination is an astringent. Astringents are products that contract and tighten blood vessels and, in some cases, body tissue. The combination of bismuth subgallate, bismuth oxide & zinc also has mild antiseptic properties.

In South Africa this combination is registered for the treatment of haemorrhoids; proctitis (inflammation of the rectum); cryptitis (inflammation in the anus); anal fissure (a small tear in the anus) and anal itching.

This medication does not cure the underlying condition, but simply keeps the symptoms under control. For it to be effective, it has to be taken regularly.

Overdose action

Recommended dosage
Adults, suppositories:iInsert one suppository per rectum 12 hourly after defecating. Ointment: clean the affected area and apply as needed thereafter.
