General information

Betamethasone drops are formulated for use as an eye, ear or nose drop to decrease inflammation. In South Africa betamethasone is registered for the treatment of the treatment inflammatory conditions.

High doses of this medicine for prolonged periods of time may increase systemic absorption, which may lead to various adverse effects. Systemic effects are however unlikely at the recommended dose.

Discard the container 30 days after first opening, because after this time the drops may be contaminated with germs.

Betamethasone reduces eye, ear and nasal symptoms by reducing inflammation.

Special precautions

  • you have a viral, bacterial or fungal eye, ear or nose infection
  • you are also taking oral corticosteroid drugs

Pregnancy: avoid. Potential risk to the foetus has been reported. Consult your doctor before use, or if you are planning to fall pregnant.

Breastfeeding: avoid. It is unknown how this medication may affect your baby. Consult your doctor before use.

Porphyria: avoid. It is unknown how this medication may affect your condition. Consult your doctor before use.

Infants and children: use only as directed by your paediatrician.

The elderly: no special precautions need to be taken.

Driving and hazardous work: no special precautions need to be taken.

Alcohol: no special precautions need to be taken.
