Benzyl benzoate is an ectoparasiticide. Ectoparasiticides are drugs that are used to treat ectoparasitic infections.

Ectoparasites - parasites found on the surface of the body - include scabies, a skin disorder caused by a mite that burrows into the skin and produces an intense, itchy rash, and pediculosis, better known as a lice infection with either the head, pubic or body louse.

In South Africa benzyl benzoate is registered for the treatment of scabies. It is also effective in treating head, body and pubic lice infections.

Benzyl benzoate should only be applied as directed and repeated exposure should be avoided.

Contact with broken skin, inflamed or infected skin, mucous membranes and the eyes should be avoided.

How does benzyl benzoate work?
Benzyl benzoate is a poison that is deadly to the mite sarcoptes scabiei and lice.

Overdose action
A small overdose is no cause for concern. If accidentally swallowed, seek emergency medical attention.

Recommended dosage
Apply as a thin layer over the whole body (excluding the face and head) after a warm bath. Allow to dry and wash of after 24 hours. Treatment can be repeated after 7 days.

For head lice the hair should be coated with the emulsion and it should be left on for 24 hours.
