General information
Ammonium chloride is an expectorant. Expectorants are drugs that stimulate the respiratory tract to increase the production of bronchial secretions. This then facilitates the expulsion of phlegm or mucus from the respiratory tract.

In South Africa ammonium chloride is registered for the treatment of coughing and also for the treatment of severe metabolic alkalosis - a metabolic condition in which the pH of the blood is elevated beyond normal - and also to keep at an acidic pH in some urinary tract disorders.
