Probiotics are defined as “live micro-organisms, which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit to the human body”.
These are “good bacteria’ or “helpful bacteria” present in food and dietary supplements.

Possible mechanisms include:
- reducing harmful organisms in the gut

- stimulating the body’s immune response.
Probiotics commonly used contains specific types of ‘good bacteria’, including Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus.
These bacteria are considered beneficial as they reduce harmful organisms in the gut and do not produce toxins harmful to the body.

Lp299v is a probiotic containing ‘beneficial bacteria’ called Lactobacillus plantarum 299v. Administration of Lactobacillus plantarum effects a favourable increase in Lactobacillus colonisation in the gut and reduction in harmful bacteria. By enhancing beneficial composition of the helpful bacteria, Lactobacillus plantarum optimises normal gut function.
