reason for hearing loss

I have a problem in that I cannot hear properly when in a group of people or even in having a one on one conversation if there is external noise such as wind blowing, radio playing or background conversation going on - or I hear the wrong words, such as mistaking the word " leaving"  for " beating"  for example. It has now come to a point where I lipread (to the extent that it is possible) to assist me with following the conversation. This is not a new problem - I have had this for many years, but is seems that it had been creeping up on me ever so quietly. Do you have any suggestions?

Hi Nandi!

Based on your complaints it seems essential that you visit an Audiologist for a hearing assessment. The symptoms seem to resemble poor speech in noise and phonemic regression {poor speech intelligibility or understanding}. It is thus imperative that you visit an Audiologist, who will then advise you further based on your assessment findings.

Kind regards....
