Hi Louise!

On review of your concern I would like to query if the beating in your ear occurs especially in a quiet environments {also, late at night and early in the morning}? This sensation that you are referring to may be pulsatile tinnitus. Now tinnitus is basically a sensation of sound in the absence of an external source. Pulsatile tinnitus in contrast is a rhythmical noise that usually has the same rate as the heart. This can be checked by feeling your pulse at the same time as listening to the tinnitus. Pulsatile tinnitus may be related to a change in blood flow in vessels near the ear, or to a change in awareness of that blood flow. Please indicate if you have taken any medication recently or if you suffer from hypertension? This is just so that we may get a better overview in order to advise you further. If the symptoms persist, begin to become worse or obtrusive, please visit a doctor for further evaluation and appropriate treatment upon consultation.

kind regards...
