Q.

Hearing loss - Hereditary?

My dad and his family are very hard of hearing. I am in my early 30' s and have good hearing. I would just like to know if there is anything that I can do to prevent my hearing from going later in life.

Dear NWH

Hearing loss can run in families. The best is to have yourself tested regularly and to protect your hearing. Don't expose yourself to high levels of noise and maintain a healthy balanced life. Write to me again if you need more specifics on hearing protection. Remember the rule about noise is; if you have to raise your voice to be heard, you could be in an environment that could be harmful. Keep your length of exposure to high levels of noise, short. Use your ipod at medium levels only. You should still be able to hear what is happening around you.

Please let me know if you need a referral to an audiologist that can monitor your hearing on a regular basis (izabelle@widex.co.za)

Kind regards
