Q.

Hearing difficulty and other symptoms

I have difficulty hearing other speak, continously having to ask people to repeat themselves. My airs are constantly " humming"  - it is a constant noise, obviously it seems louder when you are in quiet areas, and they " double click"  every single time I swallow. As a child they wanted to remove the nerve in my left ear, but my mother would not allow it for fear of something going wrong. I have always been hard of hearing. Is there a " term"  for the above symptoms, and can any of these be fixed through medical aid?

Hi Nadia!

On reviewing your symptoms it seems imperative that you visit an Audiologist in conjunction with an Ear Nose and Throat {ENT} specialist. The above mentioned health professionals would be able to assist and manage your concerns appropriately.

The "term" used to classify the symptom that you have highlighted is known as tinnitus, however, this needs to be appropriately assessed during your consult with the above mentioned health professionals.

Your medical aid company would be best able to advise you on what you are covered for, based on the medical aid scheme criteria and selected option that you are on. Please try to follow through with an appointment with an ENT specialist and Audiologist without delay so that you may receive appropriate management as soon as possible.

Kind regards,
