Q.

cochlear implant work if ear hair damage

My 76 year old father has slowly been developing serious hearing loss. His ' hairs'  in the ear are damaged and he believes because of that nothing can really help. He does have two hearing aids but they don' t help much. Can a cochlear implant work if this ' hair'  damage is the cause of loss of hearing. how much is an implant? How long does it take to recover from surgery? what kind of improvement can be expected? How much ' therapy'  will he need to be sble to understand the noise he hopefully will begin to hear/
thanks Valeska

Dear Valeska

A cochlear implant is a very expensive and extensive operation and at his age i wouldn't recommend it. If he still has some hair cell functioning left, it would be good for him to persist with hearing aids. If he is not getting satisfactory results from his hearing aids, he might need to be retested and maybe upgraded with his hearing aids.

Dear Valeska

A cochlear implant can however be done at any age, if the patient' s health allows for the surgery. He can ask his Audiologist to refer him for a cochlear implant evaluation, so that you can get a better idea about all the implications and possibilities.
