Q.

blocking my ear to sleep properly

I am a very light sleeper, and with two parrots who wake up early they tend to wake me up. If noise is keeping me awake I use the palm of my hand to block my ear. I have been doing this for years, and usually only on my left side.

As I have been doing it a long time, the cartilage in that ear is not the same as the other ear, due to the pressure of my hand on it, it is being squashed down a bit.

When I do wake up my ear is sometimes a bit sore but it clears quickly.

I have a few concerns, will this do anything bad to the outer cartilage which is being pushed down?
Is it bad for my ear/hearing to do this?

Are there any earplugs I could use to sleep with?

Yes, the constant pressure on your ear can do harm to your outer ear cartilage. The shape could change with constant exposure to pressure over time. There are several comfortable earplugs that you can use, the same soft ones that are sometimes used for hearing protection against noise are comfortable enough to sleep with.

I would also advise you to see your general practitioner, just to make sure that there is no medical reason for the light sleep. Also remember to keep our stress levels low and your body and mind, healthy and fit. You could also make a few adjusments to your environment to make the noise levels more comfortable for you.
