Q.

Bleeding ear

The past couple of weeks my ears have been giving me hassles. It sometimes feels as if I am talking under water and when I clean it, there is quite a lot of wax. The worrying part is that I sometimes see blood in the ear canal. I work in a high noise environment (aviation). Can this be the cause?

Dear Charms

The first thing is - please don't clean your ears with cotton buds, you are very likely doing more harm than good and it is possible that you might be causing some of the bleeding in your ear. By cleaning your ears, you are removing the protective layer of wax in the canal and you are also interfering with the natural cleansing process of the ear. Concerning the blocked feeling in your ears, i would recommend that you see an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist if it doesn't clear up.

Then lastly - if you are working in a high noise environment then it is very important that you should use noise protection and that you have your hearing evaluated on a regular basis.

Please let me know if you need any further information

Kind regards
