Want to find out about continual bass rumble in right ear

I am a 63 year old man living in a small town, Grahamstown. For a month I have experienced a low rumbling sound in my right ear in my house. I live in a quiet neighbourhood. I don't seem to hear this sound in other areas. I have heard a similar sound on and off over many years (I thought it might have been trucks whose drivers leave their engines on the whole night because of starter motor problems). However, it was pretty irregular. Now it's almost all the time. I can't seem to locate any likely source. Switched off all my machines in my house. I would like answers to the following questions, if possible: 1) Is it an internal or an external problem 2) Should I have my ears tested? My hearing seems fine. 3) Ear plugs provide little relief. The only time I can cut out the sound is when I push my index finger in my ear. What would you suggest practically? Your response would be greatly appreciated.

Hallo Tony.  Sorry for the late response but there seemed to be some technical problem.  You have low frequency tinnitus.  Very often it will be periodically and come and go and later on it will become continuous.  Tinnitus is an internal sound and is perceived by your brain.  You are not loosing your brain......2.  yes you should have your ears tested and even something like an earwax plug can cause tinnitus.  You are welcome to share your hearing test results with me.  3.  Ear plugs will not improve it but can even make it worse.  Interesting about the index finger.  There is help for tinnitus.  Hou moed.
