9 Year old has hearing loss (high frequencies) in both ears

Hi there. My daughter (9 year old) was diagnosed with hearing loss in both her ears (minimal loss in both ears on high frequencies). She must wear hearing aids in class. We bought her the hearing aids and it is going well. She asks me all the time if she has to wear the aids also when she is big. I really do not know how to answer - it breaks my heart. I am also concerned that the hearing loss in her ears will get worse. The audiologist at the hearing institute in Bellville said that it may or may not. They do not know what has caused the hearing loss - she never had any ear infections and they assume she was born with it. Any comments will be appreciated.

Hi!

It is good that your daughter has been fitted with hearing aids early, hence, this will greatly improve her language development. Hearing loss at birth does occur, however, it is imperative that you appropriately manage it as soon as possible. It is also important that your daughter continue to have her hearing tested regularly so that her hearing can be monitored and managed appropriately, should there be any changes {based possibly on the type of hearing loss present}. Based on the type and degree of your daughter's hearing loss, the Audiologist may select in the ear {ITE} hearing aids for when she is older. However, this is not advised at an early age due to the rapid growth of the ear and is hence, not a practical solution. Thus, it is imperative that you continue to liaise with your Audiologist to appropriately manage your daughter's hearing loss.
