Hearing loss is normally divided into two categories: conductive hearing loss and sensorineural hearing loss, depending on where the hearing loss originates in the ear. One can also have a mixed hearing loss, which is a combination of the two. Knowing the type of hearing loss is necessary in order to provide proper treatment. The symptoms of hearing deficiency are so varied that no one symptom would be interpreted as indicating the possibility of a loss. Hearing loss is an invisible problem which can go unnoticed for years. Hearing tests are performed to determine whether a person has a hearing loss, how severe the loss is, in which part of the ear the damage is, and what aid he can receive.
