What is astigmatism?
Astigmatism is a visual impairment that can result in blurry or distorted vision at all distances. People with astigmatism may also be short or long sighted. This can interfere with your daily activities, from close-up reading, to looking further into the distance such as at road signs. The degree to which your vision is affected will depend on your level of astigmatism.
What causes astigmatism?
Astigmatism is caused when either the front of the eye (cornea) or the lens within the eye, is an irregular shape. Instead of being spherical and round, it is longer in one direction than the other, like a rugby ball. Because of this irregular shape, light passing through to the retina at the back of the eye is not focused properly, creating an irregularly blurred image.
How do I know if I have astigmatism?
Your eye care professional will examine your eyes to determine whether you require vision correction. Should you require a prescription to help you to see, and if you are found to have astigmatism, this does not in any way preclude you from choosing to wear contact lenses. The exact variety of contact lens that is right for you will be discussed.
If you have astigmatism, you are not alone
Nearly half of the population has some form of astigmatism¹, but its worth remembering that not all contact lenses for astigmatism are the same. The good news is whether astigmatism is combined with short or long-sightedness, theres an ACUVUE® lens for you.²
