Q.

URGENT -woried about brother

My brothers both have diabetes - my younger one is actually my big concern. He had Type 2 and has gone over to Type 1 diabetes now. Injecting twice a day - the doctor increased the volume but his sugar is still in the area of +- 22.00 !
he is 37 and a bit overweight. (tummy)
the insulen doesn' t seem to be bringing down his sugar level???
he really tries to watch what he eats etc. but is complaining about being thirsty all the time, urinating like 4 times a night and constantly tired.... the doctors that he goes to see doesn' t seem very interested to help and just do a EKG and change his meds?!
PLEASE HELP OR WHERE OR WHO CAN U RECOMMEND TO SEE IN POTCHEFSTROOM - NORTH WEST?

Good blood sugar control is important - the medication is one aspect, but the diet and exercising especially for overweight patients are also important aspects. Exercising address insulin resistance and helps thus to reduce the blood sugar levels in this way, apart from the benefits of weight loss, etc if you exercise enough. It can be a process to get to well controlled levels - a patient can, if educated, increase his own insulin untill they have reached controlled levels - maybe your brother can discuss this with his doctor. Otherwise if he is with a General practitioner he may request to be referred to a specialist with knowledge in diabetes care. It may be necessary to change his insulin regimen to another type of insulin - but his treating doctor must decide.
