Dear Angela

Unintentional weight loss always needs an explanation. Causes that need to be looked for in a type 1 diabetic include Addison’s disease(low cortisol), overactive thyroid, celiac disease, gastroparesis(stomach emptying is delayed, and patients get early fullness with or without vomiting secondary to nerve damage to the stomach), kidney problems, and very poor glucose control. If these are negative then your doctor will need to look for other causes which are beyond the scope of this forum. Suggest your husband’s son sees his doctor for a good assessment.
