Diabetes can cause nerve symptoms, but the symptoms usually start in the toes on both sides, and then move up the legs. The hands are usually only affected when the symptoms in the feet have reached the knees. You may have a problem in the spine causing the one-sided symptoms, and hence suggest seeing your doctor for a referral to a neurologist.
