Is bacon unhealthy?

Hi Doc, please advise whether breakfast bacon is unhealthy for diabetics or other people. How often could it be eaten and how much.
Thanks for answering.

Dear Helena
Bacon as part of a balance meal plan would be acceptable. As it has fat in it, you would need the amount of fat to fall within your daily limit. Your daily limit as based on the current guidelines(SA diabetes guidelines) for a low fat diet would mean that of your total daily calories, your fat content should be less than 35% of total calories and saturated fat should be less than 7% of total calories. You can get a rough idea of your daily calorie allowance from your dietician, and once you have that, then you can work out 7% of that to see how much bacon you can eat.
