Q.

Hypoglycemia: can this cause lingering muscle pain?

Hi
I am a type 1 diabetic, and I had quite a serious hypoglycemic episode at work on Tuesday. I did not lose onsciousness, but I had to be assisted by my colleagues and the clinic sister and the episode lasted for quite a while. The next day I felt extremely weak and suffered from muscle pains, almost as if I had flu. Why would that happen, what causes it?
Thanks!
Heidi

Dear Heidi
Muscle aches post hypoglycemia is described, and typically happens if a patient has had a fit during the hypoglycemia. It can happen after a hypoglycemic event without losing consciousness, but mechanistically I can’t give you a good reason why it happens. Certainly there are hormonal responses to the low sugar, and these may have an effect.
