Q.

Glucose reading- Diabetic or not?

Dear Doctor

I was feeling quite lightheaded and almost collapsed today.
I went to my GP for a checkup. I have had previous high blood pressure- have not taken tabs for 3 days.

In any case, my BP was high (181/94), but he also tested my sugar and cholesterol.
My blood glucose level was 10.2 and cholesterol was 6.92.
As this was taken at about 4:30pm, he said that I need to come in on a fasting state to re-check.
Is a reading of 10.2 (4 hours after last meal) suggestive of possible diabetes or not. I am 67 years old and know that I am probably 8 kg overweight.

Thanks

Yes, you may definitely be at risk. A random value of more than 7.8 mmol/l is indicative of impaired glucose tolerance and if it is more than 11 mmol/l it is diabetes. You definitely need more tests. Your cholesterol was also high and with all your other risk factors you should take treatment for that as well.
