Q.

Glibenclamide

Hi Doctor, a friend was diagnosed with diabetes 10.6 and tried gilbenclamide. The first day of her medication, she had a stroke in the evening. Do you think the diagnosis was wrong, the medication is incorrect or possibly something else is wrong that she is also not aware of ? She lives in Seychelles and is 55 years old. Has lost a lot of weight in the last few months. Regards Veronica

Dear Veronica

If the level of 10.6 was a fasting level and she had associated symptoms of weight loss, tiredness, blurred vision, and was drinking excessively, then the diagnosis of diabetes was correct. Unfortunately the patients with diabetes are at higher risk for stroke, and also have other risks for stroke like hypertension and raised cholesterol. Regarding the weight loss, if it is not from the diabetes, i.e. it does not improve with the glucose being lowered, then she will need to be investigated for it.
