Dear Gordon
The diet for diabetes has evolved over time, and at present there is no specific diet for patients with diabetes, but rather a diet that we all should follow and be individualized according to a person’s particular tastes. Generally this diet will involve a low fat, low GI, high fiber diet with a Mediterranean bias. The amount of carbohydrates is in dispute, i.e. should we eating very low carbohydrates or just lower than current intake (normally this about 30-60-% of total calories from carbohydrates). Most guidelines would suggest a minimum of 130g of carbs daily. Losing weight is always hard regardless of being diabetic. The best way is to cut down on total calories, more so than the type of calories, for your body can only burn so many calories a day, and if you eat less than this, then weight loss will occur. Exercise requirements for weight loss are a lot and entail about 60-90 minutes every day. Exercise less than this amount will help you live longer regardless of weight loss and will also help with glucose control
