Q.

Best diet and medication question

Hi Doc,

Two questions:

1. What is the best diet for someone who is insulin resistant (thankfully not yet diabetic)? Low-carb, moderate fat or low-GI, low fat?

2. Is there anything " bad"  about Metformin (except for causing stomach upset if one don' t eat enough before taking a tablet)? My gynae prescribes it to me for PCOS and insulin resistance, but my GP told me to be careful of it because it can cause problems.

Thanx!

Low-fat and low GI is the best, combined with some form of exercising program.

All the medications have side-effects, but it doesn' t mean that you will develop it. A healthy lifestyle with a healthy diet and some form of exercising can also address the insulin resistance. There were some studies evaluating the effects of Metformin in patients with PCOS and overall it has been proven to be beneficial, but discuss it with your doctor as it is not registered in South Africa for those indications yet.
