Dragon boat team races for breast health

The amaBele Belles Dragon Boat Racing Team, a hardy group of breast cancer survivors based in Cape Town, leave for the International Dragon Boat Championships in Peterborough, Canada, at the end of this week.

In Canada the women will paddle - as opposed to row - against other dragon-boat teams, also made up of breast cancer survivors. Part fitness club, part group support, the amaBele Belles was formed in 2006, and is made up of a multicultural clutch of women, aged 30 to mid-50s, who have two things in common - they have survived cancer, and they like to race dragon boats.

This will be the club's second international race, following on their silver-medal winning performance in Singapore in 2006. They've spent the past few years racing funds to pay their way to Canada.
