Asthma

Q.

Why does medical aid not pay for asthma medication?

I am with Gems, they don't pay my symbicord, monte air, avymist or texa because it is a) not on their list and b) monte air, avymist and texa is for treatment of other problems like hayfever and not asthma. My medicine currently costs me R1700 a month, so I don't take it everyday as I simply cannot afford it.

Asthma is a PMB condition.  This means that the medical aids have to pay for it.  You should discuss this with your medical aid and there may be other reason why they are not paying for it.  If you are still unhappy you should write to the medical aid ombudsman (support@medicalschemes.com).
