Jenny Buckle, mother of identical triplet boys with autism, aged 15 is the founder and Programme Director of Reach Autism SA (2001) and AutismDIY (2009).
Rourke, Tristan & Mitchell Buckle were diagnosed with autism when they were 3 years old and in desperate need of effective early intervention. Bucke went in search of HOPE and travelled overseas to spend time with professionals, and attending workshops and several training courses.
REACH Autism started out as workshop-based assistance for parents who wanted to learn how to rehabilitate and understand their child with ASD. REACH has grown enormously since its inception in 2001 and they are now involved in full-time management of home-based and/or school facilitation programmes. Jenny Buckle works within a therapeutic team including a medical doctor (biomedical intervention is very important), speech therapists, occupational therapists and educational psychologists.
AutismDIY (founded by Buckle and Chara Swart, another mother of a child with autism) is a small centre that operates from Parow in Cape Town – their desire being to take the information to as many people as possible. Ignorance breeds fear and there is simply too little appropriate information out there for anyone who loves and spends time with a child with autism. Their way of providing cost effective, self paced training, information and services to everyone who wants to help a person with ASD or other developmental delays.
